Hakata Gion Yamakasa (July, Central Fukuoka)

Every July, the streets of Hakata turn their full attention to the Yamakasa. With over 760 years of history, Hakata Gion Yamakasa is Fukuoka’s signature summer festival, dedicated to Kushida Shrine. At the early-morning Oiyama race, bearers shoulder the towering floats and surge through the streets along the Nakagawa River.
